MIT tech start-up and Predictive Digital Twin developer, Akselos, has strengthened its advisory board with oil and gas industry technical veteran, Jens Peter Riber.
The appointment will support the company’s ambition to revolutionize asset management in the energy sector with its MIT-licensed technology. The tech combines the world’s most advanced engineering simulation software with sensors, data analytics and machine learning to create Predictive Digital Twins of entire assets.
Jens Peter Riber spent over 30 years with international oil and gas operator Maersk Oil, where he held various engineering and leadership positions, rising to Technical Director and Director of Engineering. Having overseen the design and construction of many of Maersk’s assets, Riber’s understanding of oil and gas structures and engineering processes will be invaluable as Akselos continues to grow in the industry.
Jens Peter Riber said: “I was first introduced to Akselos through the Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre (DHRTC) in 2015. Having spent most of my career as project and technical director with a background as a structural engineer, working on the design, construction and maintenance of huge offshore structures, I was astonished by what this new technology meant for asset design and management, and could see that it would be of particular value in the North Sea as the basin matures and our assets approach the end of their design life.
“It’s great to see that some of the bigger operators in the sector are now embracing the tech to support safe Asset Life Extension, and it’s thrilling to be on board as the company continues to challenge the status quo.”
Jens Peter’s appointment is one of three senior appointments as the company gears up for growth. Akselos has also appointed MIT Ford Professor of Engineering, Anthony Patera as scientific advisor, and John Bell, former INOVX CEO, as Senior Vice President.

Akselos’ technology offers the industry real-time access to exact virtual models of large assets like fixed platforms and FPSOs, to enable condition based monitoring and predictive maintenance.
The company has already been recognized as a game-changer in the offshore oil and gas industry, having created the world’s largest Predictive Digital Twin of a 300,000 ton FPSO.
