Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has approved up to £10 million in funding to support the expansion of the Port of Nigg, aiming to enhance its capacity and capabilities in the offshore wind industry.
The investment will be used for the development of the port’s Inner East Quay, creating a heavy-duty quayside with roll-on roll-off capability. HIE believes this will attract new businesses and investment while strengthening operations across Scotland’s growing offshore wind sector.
Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes described the funding as a catalyst for further economic growth, stating: “An investment of this nature sends a clear signal to investors that Scotland is open for business, and the Scottish Government and our partners stand ready to help unleash the enormous economic benefits of our offshore wind industry.”
In Case You Missed it:
HIE’s director of strategic projects, David Oxley, highlighted the significance of the development: “Our support for this project is about keeping the UK and the Highlands and Islands region at the forefront of the energy sector, particularly renewable energy, and strengthening our international competitiveness. There are many obvious benefits for the region’s economy and job creation.”
The investment is part of the Scottish Government’s £500 million commitment over five years to support the offshore wind supply chain.
Additionally, Scottish Enterprise has allocated a £3.2 million grant towards a £7.2 million industrial park near the Port of Montrose. The facility will further support offshore wind infrastructure, reinforcing Montrose’s role in Scotland’s renewable energy transition.
