Estonian fish processor buys Aberdeen-based John Ross Jr

Aberdeen-based fish processor John Ross Jr has been bought by an Estonia based fish processing giant leading to a cash windfall for founder Andrew Leigh.

Smoked salmon specialist John Ross Jr and Coln Valley Smokery together make up the JRJ Group, were bought by PRFoods, the largest manufacturer of fish in Estonia.

John Ross Jr was founded by Andrew Leigh in 1987 and the company had deals in place to supply Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

The firm bought the Cotswold-based Coln Valley Smokery in 2009 to add to its product range and give it access to sporting events including Cheltenham, the Henley Royal Regatta and Wimbledon, which Coln had agreements with.

PRFoods has revenues of £42.4m in revenue per year.

Next generation family-members Vicky Leigh-Pearson and Chris Leigh will continuing in senior roles and as shareholders in the group, but it is believed Andrew Leigh will exit the company.
