Preparations for Aberdeen’s leading youth recruitment event are well under way.
The annual Moving On event, a partnership between Aberdeen City Council, Skills Development Scotland, and the Department for Work and Pensions, has again attracted a wide range of employers and training providers from a variety of sectors.
Aimed at 16-24-year-olds, Moving On is specifically designed for Aberdeen’s young workforce, creating an ideal opportunity for young people to meet employers face-to-face, find out more about their industries, the jobs they have on offer, and what they’re looking for in candidates.
The event takes place on Monday (March 25) at the Town House and a mix of full-time and part-time positions will be on offer, including entry level jobs and apprenticeships. Training providers will be on hand to speak about the courses they have on offer, how to apply for them, and how they can help you to get your foot in the door for a job.
Councillor Douglas Lumsden, Co-Leader of Aberdeen City Council and Convener of the City Growth and Resources Committee, said: “Moving On has proven again and again to be a successful event in Aberdeen’s recruitment calendar, with high demand for places from employers and training providers. It’s ideally suited not only to school leavers, but also to other young people who are looking to take the next step into training or the world of work.
“Moving On offers Aberdeen’s young people a chance to shine, to make an impression on prospective employers and to find out more about the options available to them as they move towards their future careers. There are part-time jobs available here too, which may be particularly attractive to those who are staying on for fifth and sixth year at school, undertaking a training course, or heading on to further education. I would strongly encourage our young future workforce to come along and explore what’s available to them.”
More than 30 employers and training providers have signed up to Moving On including: AECC, Aberdeen City Council, Bon Accord Care, Arnold Clark, Ernst &Young, McDonalds, Cineworld, Royal Air Force, British Army, Aldi, Bright Horizons, Clyde Marine, Aberdeen Foyer, Pathways, SHMU, Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), Enable, North East Scotland College, Robert Gordon University, Tullos Training, and Pure Gym.
Jane Gibson, careers adviser at Skills Development Scotland, added: “The annual Moving On event is of real value to local young people.
“By participating in events like this, young people have a chance to expand their networks and gain valuable insight into different careers, routes and pathways.
“We are looking forward to meeting lots of people on the day and helping them learn about the variety of local initiatives and the careers support we can offer them from our centre in Aberdeen.”
Department for Work and Pensions Partnerships manager Kirsty Jarman added: “Opening up and promoting Aberdeen’s opportunities for work, training and learning is crucial to helping our future young workforce find out about what’s available to them in the world of work, as well as to find out about the support and benefits they’re entitled to as they embark on their career path.
“We are very happy to be working in partnership with Aberdeen City Council and Skills Development Scotland to deliver this event and other jobs fairs during the year to ensure that everyone who needs it, has access to the array of opportunities and support the city can offer.”
Moving On opens at noon on Monday, with a quiet session designed for people with additional support needs. It opens fully at 12.30 and will run until 5.30pm.
