1 – Select the right crane

Before you call for a crane hire Birmingham you need to assess your needs so you can use the right crane for the job. There are different sizes and even two main types. These are fixed or mobile.

Usually, fixed cranes are used in industrial jobs which are complex and require high clearance. Mobile cranes are what you would expect and are cranes that can be moved around independently and are used for small jobs that are less complex.

Take some time to see which crane you need by sizing up your job and seeing how high your materials need to be lifted. In many cases, somebody looking to hire a crane will have a small job in which a mobile crane is sufficient.

2 – Perform daily checks

One of the biggest reasons for crane accidents is the condition of the crane itself. There are usually mechanical problems that are missed or ignored and end up impeding the safe operation of the crane.

It’s important for a thorough check of the operability of the crane to happen before anybody gets in the crane and starts working with it. For instance, there should be enough liquids for it to work well such as lubricants, oil levels, and hydraulic fluid. If they are low not only should they be filled but there should be a check for leaks. This might be the reason the fluids are low.

The next most important thing to check is the safety system. The anti-two block, the rated capacity limiter, and outriggers should all be operational and in working order.

3 – Clear the path

Obstacles in the way of the crane are a very big danger and can often go unnoticed once it is working. The path and the working area of the crane itself need to be checked to see that it is clear and the crane can work unimpeded.

Power lines are the easiest ones to miss and are one of the most dangerous obstacles for a crane operator. When the crane is traveling, there should be a signal person to help the operator maneuver the crane to its destination. They should be on the lookout for anything that the crane could strike on its way. Some obstacles can’t be moved or avoided so make sure to find multiple ways to get the crane to the worksite.
