Aberdeen and Glasgow City Councils have been recognised among Scotland’s top performers in school catering, taking home major honours at this year’s Scottish School Food Awards.

Both councils were praised for their commitment to healthy, sustainable and inclusive meal provision across local schools, with judges commending innovative menus and a strong focus on pupil engagement.

Aberdeen City Council’s catering teams earned accolades for improving nutritional standards while reducing food waste and supporting local suppliers. Glasgow City Council was celebrated for its ambitious programme promoting plant-based options and free meal initiatives that tackle food insecurity.

The Scottish School Food Awards, held in Edinburgh on 22 February, brought together local authorities, chefs and suppliers from across the country to celebrate excellence in school dining. Categories recognised achievements in sustainability, nutrition, and community impact.

Organisers highlighted the continued progress Scotland is making in creating positive food experiences for children and young people. “This year’s winners show what can be achieved when councils, schools and communities work together for a healthier future,” said a spokesperson for the awards committee.

Both councils said the recognition reflected years of teamwork and a shared commitment to supporting pupil wellbeing through nutritious meals and education around food choices.
