WELL-SAFE SOLUTIONS, a leading well decommissioning specialist based in Aberdeen, has announced a significant expansion of its operations through a strategic partnership with Spirit Energy. The Aberdeen-based company has signed an agreement with Spirit Energy to include a well from the Appleton field in the existing scope of the Well-Safe Defender semi-submersible rig. This collaboration marks another milestone in Well-Safe Solutions’ commitment to safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible well decommissioning operations.

The project involves integrating the Appleton well, located 160 miles east of Dundee, into the Well-Safe Defender’s portfolio. The addition of this well, the value of which remains undisclosed, follows the successful decommissioning of wells in the Chestnut and Trees fields. The Well-Safe Defender, which mobilised in March 2023, was initially tasked with plugging and abandoning (P&A) 14 wells on the UK continental shelf for Spirit Energy.

Chris Hay, Director of Strategy and Commercial at Well-Safe Solutions, expressed his pride in the company’s achievement, stating, “Spirit Energy’s decision to grant Well-Safe Solutions this contract extension is an endorsement of the excellent performance of the Well-Safe Defender and its crew. Our excellent Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) and operational track record throughout the ongoing campaign has provided Spirit Energy with the assurance and encouragement they needed to award us this scope extension.”

Well-Safe Solutions’ success in securing this contract extension underscores its reputation for collaborative and efficient decommissioning operations. “From the earliest days of Well-Safe Solutions over six years ago, we have fostered collaborative working throughout the industry to realise safe, smart, and efficient well decommissioning operations,” added Chris Hay.

Nicky Riley, Head of Wells for Spirit Energy, emphasised the importance of the partnership, stating, “Well-Safe’s continued strong performance has allowed us to collaborate further with the team – accelerating the decommissioning of the Appleton well, aligning us further with our strategic pillar of meeting and de-risking our decommissioning operations.”

This contract win marks another achievement for Well-Safe Solutions, which has been actively expanding its operations internationally. The company recently made headlines with its entry into Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) projects and welcomed Alexa Duncan as its first-ever Energy Transition Manager. With a team of over 380 employees, Well-Safe Solutions operates globally from its Aberdeen headquarters. The company is renowned for its bespoke engineering packages, subsurface basis of design solutions, and a campaign-based approach to well decommissioning, maximising economies of scale to achieve significant time and financial savings.

As Aberdeen’s well-decommissioning expertise gains international recognition, Well-Safe Solutions continues to strengthen its position as a key player in the energy transition landscape, setting new standards for excellence and innovation in the industry.
