Equipped with a storage capacity of 49.9 megawatts, this battery energy storage system (BESS) has the capability to supply power to up to 10,000 homes for an entire day.
The proposals faced intense backlash from the local population due to worries about traffic and safety.
In a detailed objection letter on behalf of her congregation, Rev Anne Robertson expressed the community’s strong disapproval of the project and called for its rejection by the authorities.
The church community also voiced concerns regarding incidents of battery energy storage facilities catching fire in South Korea and the UK, arguing that it is “unacceptable to bring this potential risk into such a highly populated residential community.”
However, councillors have given Persley Croft BESS Ltd the go-ahead to create the site.
The new battery storage facility will link to the current SSEN Persley Grid substation on Station Road and is expected to be operational for the next 40 years.
