An Aberdeen-based charity which provides vital opportunities for children to learn life skills brought another momentous year to a close with the announcement of a key appointment.

The Lifestars project, created at Dyce Academy by Neve McPherson in 2016, has welcomed Glen Schreuder to its board in a bid to widen and deepen the skills set available to the charity.

Glen has been actively involved with Lifestars as a volunteer for over a year, drawing on his connections within the local business and sports communities to support the charity which has raised tens of thousands of pounds to help local youngsters hone key life skills and qualities such teamwork and confidence using active learning.

Through activities such as lunchtime clubs and accessible, inclusive local out-of-school outings Lifestars has already touched the lives of numerous local children.  The organisation encourages senior pupils to become activity leaders, equipping them with a training pack to ensure they are armed with the knowledge to deliver inclusive sessions. The training has been developed in collaboration with SportAberdeen and Support for Learning staff at Dyce Academy with support from a range of organisations including city PE teachers, Active Schools coordinators, Aberdeen Football Club Community Trust, and Aberdeen City Council.

Through career fairs, school trips, fundraising events, or the funding and support of specific projects, the charity is now hoping to build on its success to date by expanding into more schools and offering its skills program to support and provide opportunity for more children than ever before.

Commenting on his appointment to the board, Glen Schreuder said: “Being able to see first-hand the impact that the fundraising has was so rewarding for me as a volunteer, and I thank Neve for the trust she has placed in me to join the board.

“From life skills program, organising the school trips these are excellent opportunities to grow and develop young minds. With Lifestars being a family run charity, it has the extra personal feel to it, that everyone who is helped gets the attention they deserve.

“I look forward to working alongside the rest of the board to not only grow the charity but, more importantly, continue to support the children Lifestars helps, as every penny raised goes directly to these kids and their schools.

Lifestars founder Neve McPherson added: “I am delighted to have Glen join the board of Lifestars; we have seen the impact he has brought with his connections alongside his volunteering and fundraising efforts over the past year. I look forward to working with him and the rest of the board to continue our work delivering key life-skills to children across the North east.”
