ABERDEEN City Council has welcomed the announcement by Chancellor of the Exchequer the Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP that Aberdeen is set to receive funding from the UK Levelling Up Fund, as part of the UK Government’s budget plans for 2021.

Aberdeen City Council city growth and resources committee convener Councillor Ryan Houghton said: “Today’s announcement is fantastic news which will help us breathe new life into our city centre.

“We are an ambitious council and our plans for the redevelopment of Aberdeen Market and former BHS retail unit combined with associated public realm works on Union Street and to the south will bring transformational change to the heart of the city centre.”

In May 2021, Aberdeen City Council’s city growth and resources committee instructed officers to proceed with the purchase of the former Aberdeen Market and BHS to create a destination venue featuring international-style food and drink outlets as part of the city’s recovery from Covid-19.
