FAMED for its award-winning, signature Spiced Rum and flavoured rum liqueurs,Scotland’s first rum distillery, Dark Matter Distillers, has released its first ever white rum.
Venturing into this new territory for the first time, Dark Matter’s White Rum Prototype has been made from single estate sugar cane juice from Barbados, pressed using an ancient steam mill on the island. It was then carefully fermented and distilled by Dark Matter at its distillery in Banchory, Aberdeenshire.

Just 995 bottles of this limited edition experimental spirit were produced; bottles 10 – 995 are available on Dark Matter’s online shop from today, whilst bottles one to nine will be auctioned off at a future date.
Jim Ewen, Managing Director of Dark Matter Distillers, explained:
“Our prototype white rum has been quietly resting since it was distilled in 2016. It captures all the distinctive flavour characteristics of the Barbados single estate sugar cane. We decided that now is the right time to release this first or ‘prototype’ white rum. The bottles are limited and numbered, meaning that not only is this an exceptional spirit, it’s a collector’s item too. We’re expecting bottles 10 – 995 to be snapped up quickly.Bottles 01 – 09 will be auctioned in the near future as part of a more exclusively packaged release.
“We had amazing success with our inaugural cask rum release in 2021, the ‘Physicist Series’. Nine, individually labelled bottles, each representing a scientist, were drawn from the distillery’s first ever cask and sold at auction. Bottle 001, or ‘Einstein’, was sold for a staggering £13,000. We’re expecting to have similar interest from collectors with our new innovation, with bottles 01 – 09 of the white rum prototype an extension to the ‘Physicist Series’ concept.”
This is the first time that rum fans will be able to take a sip of this new, ultra premium spirit, which has already caught the eye of industry experts. The liquid was entered into the Spirits Business Rum & Cahaça Masters competition in 2017, where it won a Gold Medal in the ultra-premium category.
White Rum Prototype is 43.5% ABV and available in 70cl bottles for £55.
