Aberdeen motorists are facing more significant traffic disruption over the coming weeks as a series of essential road maintenance projects commence or continue across key routes in the city. The King George VI Bridge, the Bridge of Dee, Riverside Drive, and South College Street are all subject to closures and restrictions, extending into mid-December for some locations.
Starting at 9 am on 14 September, a section of the King George VI Bridge will close to southbound traffic for over a month, as Aberdeen City Council carries out maintenance work. Concurrently, restrictions will be implemented on the northbound carriageway of the Bridge of Dee roundabout. Both sets of works are scheduled for completion by 5 pm on 16 October.
This period of disruption follows ongoing works that have already affected Aberdeen’s road network. Maintenance on Riverside Drive, which began on 31 August, is set to conclude on 10 September.
Adding to the complexity, South College Street is also scheduled for an extended closure from 7 September, with works anticipated to continue until mid-December. These works are being undertaken by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Transmission to complete a major underground electricity cable replacement project. Engineers identified water ingress into the underground duct system during cable installation, necessitating a full closure of South College Street for safe repairs.
In Case You Missed it:
An Aberdeen City Council spokesperson commented on the forthcoming closures: “The effect of the order is to impose temporary prohibition of driving restriction on King George VI Bridge and Bridge of Dee, Aberdeen. The restrictions are in the interests of public safety during Aberdeen City Council roads maintenance works. Any queries regarding these restrictions can be directed to 03000 200 292.”
Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, allow for extended travel times, and consider alternative routes to mitigate the impact of these simultaneous infrastructure projects. The combined closures on these critical thoroughfares are expected to pose challenges for commuters navigating Aberdeen’s road network in the coming months.
