Scotland is poised to become a leader in offshore wind energy, yet it faces significant challenges in scaling up its ambitious offshore wind pipeline. With increasing turbine sizes, uncertainty in technology, and limited port infrastructure, the question stands: how can Scotland leverage its resources to deliver at scale?

ASCO, global logistics and materials management provider headquartered in Aberdeen, Scotland, in collaboration with Royal HaskoningDHV and supported by Scottish Enterprise, is leading a nation-wide logistics modelling project designed to optimise the use of existing infrastructure and reduce risks associated with offshore wind projects.

Project overview

The core objective of this initiative is to present collaborative port strategies to the industry, ensuring that the utilisation of port facilities and resources is maximised. By examining specific upcoming challenges in logistics and port infrastructure, this project aims to simulate various scenarios where multiple offshore wind construction projects – both fixed and floating – take place simultaneously.

Key considerations

The project will take into account several critical factors, including:

  • Project timeframes
  • Increasing turbine sizes
  • Uncertainty in technology
  • Limited port infrastructure and availability

Why developer collaboration is crucial

To maximise the value of this logistics project, ASCO seeks the collaboration of developers to share non-commercially sensitive information about their upcoming projects. This cooperative approach will provide insights that will:

  • Support decision making
  • Mitigate project delivery risk
  • Highlight new opportunities
  • Identify potential collaboration routes
  • Establish a stable environment

Timeline and call to action

This pivotal project runs from January to April, with input from developers required in February. We invite developers interested in contributing to this effort to reach out to Thuy-Tien Le Guen Dang, Head of New Energy and Net Zero at ASCO. Your feedback and willingness to discuss how your organisation can play a role in this ambitious initiative would be immensely valuable.
