A determined group of friends from Aberdeen are celebrating after taking on an epic charity golf challenge to play 72 holes in a single day.

After months of training, the group of four, dubbed The Aberdonians, completed The Big Golf Race last Friday (August 8th) at Aboyne and Ballater Golf Clubs raising over £2,200 so far, for Prostate Cancer UK.

The group took on the golfing challenge in honour of their good friend Barry Brander, who has recently faced prostate cancer, and in support of the 1 in 8 men in the UK affected by the disease.

Teeing off at 5am, the intrepid lads powered their way through the day covering 22 miles each – the equivalent to walking almost a marathon while carrying golf clubs. Despite tired legs, the team spirit remained strong, and they completed the full four rounds in 13 hours, clocking up an incredible 45,000 steps each.

“It was without a doubt the toughest but most rewarding day we’ve ever experienced on the golf course,” said Graeme McDonald, who took part in the challenge alongside Keith Young, Neil Archibald and Mike Robbie.

“There were some moments when we started to feel like we were flagging, but the morale between us was brilliant. We kept each other going with all the banter and laughs, and every message of support kept us going and gave us the push we needed.”

The money raised by The Aberdonians will go directly towards research that aims to improve early diagnosis and save men’s lives.

“This challenge meant so much to all of us, having supported one of our good friends through his cancer journey. We are so grateful for all the kind donations to this incredibly important cause.”
