Professor John Underhill, director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Transition at the University of Aberdeen, has been made an honorary member of the Geoscience Energy Society of Great Britain (GESGB).
An honour bestowed on only a few, Professor Underhill is the first person to be awarded it since 2019. It was given in recognition of his contribution to furthering understanding of the role that geoscience plays in delivering energy safely and securely.
Professor Underhill’s research focuses on the role of geoscience in the energy transition and use of methods and data in providing the best solutions and outcomes to deliver low-carbon net zero goals.
The announcement was made in London as part of the Society’s 60th Anniversary celebrations.
“This is a tremendous honour and I am humbled that the esteemed members of the Society have gifted me this prestigious membership,” said Professor Underhill. “It is quite remarkable to recognised by your peers for contribution to your chosen field, and I am delighted that my research, training, knowledge exchange and outreach is thought of so highly.
“I work alongside many colleagues at the University of Aberdeen and others across the energy industry and acknowledge the contribution and support by them and students that I have worked with over the years, which allows me to carry out my work at this level.”

The GESGB exists to advance, for the public benefit, education in the scientific and technical aspects of subsurface energy and related technologies. Established in 1964 by a group of like-minded professionals keen to create a community of geoscientists for networking and sharing ideas, and 60 years later it has members in every element of the subsurface energy industries active across six continents.
GESGB President Ian Sayers said: “Professor Underhill is not only a great ambassador for GESGB but for geoscience generally, as demonstrated by the many accolades he has received throughout his career.
