The Pakistani community in Aberdeen marked Pakistan’s Independence Day with a vibrant celebration at the Norwood Hotel, organised by the Aberdeen Social Club and sponsored by Rehmats Restaurant.

The event, now in its fourth year at the Norwood, was fully booked in advance as demand to attend continued to grow. More than 250 guests gathered, with attendees travelling from across Scotland- including Elgin, Dundee, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. Special Chief guest Rehmat Ali even flew in from Pakistan on the same day to join the occasion.

The evening featured a formal programme of flag raising, the national anthem and a ceremonial cake cutting, followed by live entertainment from a London-based singer accompanied by a traditional Dhol player. Guests were treated to a feast prepared by Rehmats Restaurant, whose catering team was praised for their exceptional service.

Children were entertained with activities including a magician, face painting and games, while guests received flags and themed brooches to mark the occasion. Many attended in traditional dress and in the national colours of Pakistan.

The event welcomed a diverse audience with attendees not only from the Pakistani community but also from Bangladeshi, Indian, Sri Lankan, and Scottish backgrounds. Distinguished guests included the Lord Provost of Aberdeen and Lady Provost, as well as other Councillors who attended.

The celebration was covered by Pakistani media outlets for broadcast internationally, underlining the importance of the event for the diaspora community.

Raffle prizes included a return trip to Turkey, cash and restaurant vouchers.

Speaking after the event, organisers said they were delighted with the success of the evening. “This celebration continues to grow each year, bringing communities together and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Pakistan here in Aberdeen.”

“People really enjoyed themselves – the food was lovely, the entertainment was brilliant, and the atmosphere was unforgettable,” said one delighted guest.

The annual Independence Day celebration in Aberdeen continues to grow in scale and spirit, strengthening community bonds while proudly showcasing Pakistani culture and heritage in Scotland.
