One of Aberdeen’s most prestigious hotels is set to undergo another leadership change, just five months after appointing a new general manager.
The Marcliffe Hotel and Spa, a renowned five-star establishment, is bidding farewell to Peter Walker, who took the helm in September 2024.
The sudden departure comes as a surprise given Walker’s deep connections to the hotel and his initial enthusiasm for the role. Upon his appointment, Walker had described the position as “the job I’ve always dreamt of” and expressed his emotional attachment to the Marcliffe, where he had previously worked and even got married.
Mr. Walker had earlier served at the Marcliffe from 2005 to 2009 as assistant general manager, and is a well-known figure in the north-east hospitality industry, having previously worked at Maryculter House Hotel, Meldrum House Hotel, and Ardoe House Hotel.
A spokesman for Balmoral Group said: “Through mutual agreement, Peter Walker is no longer in the position of general manager.
“Kellie Rixon MBE, who has been leading our systems integration and staff development programmes, will step into the role of interim general manager, overseeing operations during this transformative period.”
The hotel has been undergoing significant changes since its acquisition by Balmoral Group. A multi-million-pound investment plan was announced in October 2024, focusing on upgrading facilities and enhancing the guest experience.
The Marcliffe also launched a #MyMarcliffe campaign to gather community input on the hotel’s future direction.
The hotel recently underwent a brief closure for staff training and cultural development, and is planning to reopen on January 17, 2025. This closure was in response to guest feedback collected through the #MyMarcliffe survey, which highlighted a desire for improved service standards.

Ms. Rixon also spent two years as brand director for Macdonald Hotels & Resorts, and in 2012, she received an MBE for her contributions to the hospitality sector in the Queen’s birthday honours list.
The hospitality industry will be watching closely as this esteemed hotel navigates yet another transition, hoping to maintain its reputation as the hospitality jewel of the north-east while embracing necessary changes for the future.
