Pupils at Dyce School in Aberdeen have rolled up their sleeves and showcased their green fingers for an outdoor learning initiative, funded by Barratt and David Wilson Homes North Scotland.
The sustainable initiative invited primary schools and nurseries to transform their playgrounds into wildlife-friendly spaces, with six getting involved across Scotland.
Participating schools and nurseries received £500 from the leading housebuilder to purchase outdoor gardening equipment and plants to enhance the school grounds and create vibrant spaces for outdoor learning and natural play.
At Dyce School, the funding was used to replenish a large flower bed in its playground that had fallen into disrepair. Pupils came up with the idea to include sensory elements and to grow fruit.
Pupils of all ages were involved in the project, helping to plan, plant and maintain the new green space. Outdoor, hands-on learning is important for youngsters’ development, supporting their wellbeing, connection with nature and creativity.

The project allows pupils to learn about biodiversity in a meaningful way while creating something that will benefit the school community for years to come.
Five other schools and nurseries across Scotland are involved in the initiative, including in Nairn, Fife and Kilmarnock.
