A popular Aberdeen city centre restaurant is set to undergo a £200,000 reconstruction after a devastating fire caused significant damage to the establishment. The blaze, which broke out at Vovem steakhouse on Union Street, forced the closure of the restaurant and led to the evacuation of neighbouring businesses.
The fire, which occurred on September 26, 2024, required the response of around 30 firefighters to bring it under control. Eyewitnesses reported seeing flames rising from the roof of the building, with thick black smoke visible across the city.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, the restaurant management issued a statement on social media, saying they would be : “closed for business until further notice.” The fire caused extensive damage to the kitchen area, while the front-of-house section remained untouched.
The incident also led to temporary road closures in the area, including parts of Union Street, Summer Street, Union Wynd, and Little Chapel Street.
Vovem, known for its steak, extensive wine list, and cocktails, had previously gained national attention when it was featured on Adam Richman’s TV series “Adam Richman Eats Britain” on Food Network UK.
Two months after the incident, Vovem reopened its bar on November 29.
Although the kitchen is still closed and no food is available, a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page confirmed intentions to resume serving meals in 2025.
Additionally, construction documents submitted to Aberdeen City Council outline the repairs planned for Vovem following the fire, to be undertaken by Portlethen-based architect Richard Slater.
The preparation kitchen will require reconstruction, along with the roof and equipment at the back of the property. The documents also indicate that certain areas of the restaurant will need refurbishment due to water damage associated with the fire.
The overall cost for the Vovem fire repairs is projected to be £200,000.
As the city awaits the restaurant’s full revival, the incident serves as a reminder of the resilience of local businesses in the face of adversity.
