Aberdeen Science Centre (ASC), a 5-star rated landmark and one of Aberdeen’s top visitor attractions, is poised to become the first in North East Scotland to offer virtual reality (VR) experiences.

It is hoped the innovative addition will launch in the spring/summer of 2025 and aims to enhance STEM education and engagement for visitors of all ages.

For over 35 years, ASC has been at the forefront of science engagement, welcoming more than 65,000 visitors annually.

The centre which underwent a £6 million renovation in recent years, sees VR as the next step in fulfilling its mission “to inspire a lifelong interest in science.”

Introducing VR marks an exciting venture for ASC, expanding its educational horizons and offering visitors opportunities for immersive learning experiences.

ASC plans to implement ClassVR and Eduverse platforms, which provide 360-degree videos, explorable scenes, and 3D models across various subjects.

Research indicates that VR technology can significantly boost student concentration and engagement, with ClassVR increasing knowledge retention by up to 75%.

As part of the rollout, ASC hopes to introduce VR experiences to three local schools and conduct community workshops on topics such as geology and volcanoes.

The initiative includes the acquisition of 38 VR headsets and comprehensive staff training to ensure maximum educational impact.

While investors are yet to be confirmed, ASC is actively seeking support to bring this advanced technology to the North East.

The introduction of VR experiences is expected to further solidify ASC’s support for STEM education and inspiring the next generation of innovators in science and technology.

As Scotland’s first science and discovery centre, ASC continues to lead the way in innovative educational experiences.

Bryan Snelling, chief executive of Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “We are really excited about the opportunities VR can bring in terms of enhancing the visitor experience at the centre.

“We want to embrace digital technology and virtually, the world is our oyster!

“VR headsets and the software that has been developed for educational use will allow us to transport visitors to places never seen before – such as inside a volcano, becoming a blood cell inside a vein or standing on top of a wind turbine!

“There is also huge scope to create original content in partnership with companies in industries include energy, space, life sciences, innovation, sports, culture and many more.

“We are now seeking investors who are keen to get involved in the first phase of bringing VR to Aberdeen Science Centre.”
