The Oldmachar branch of the British Legion in Bridge of Don is facing the prospect of closure after more than five decades serving the local community.
The club, the last remaining British Legion social venue in Aberdeen, has long provided a meeting place for serving and former service personnel, as well as hosting a wide range of community activities. Regular events include Sunday night bingo, darts, pool, snooker, line dancing, war gaming, slimming classes and group meetings. The venue also offers function space for up to 100 guests.
In Case You Missed it:
Rising costs for energy, stock and staffing, combined with a decline in active membership, have left the club in a precarious financial position. In response, a GoFundMe appeal has been launched, with £4,510 raised towards its £7,500 target, including a £3,000 anonymous donation.
In a public statement, the club said it had “coped with price rises in all areas” until recently but was now struggling as an ageing membership and fewer visitors put further strain on finances. Fundraising functions are held regularly, open to members, guests and the wider public, with the hall and lounge also available for private hire.
If the funding target is not met, the club warns it may be forced to close its doors, ending a 50-year chapter of social and community service in the Bridge of Don.
