Jim Young, an Alford-based engineer, was awarded the top prize at this year’s Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Scotland Awards. Recognised for over 51 years of volunteering with the ICE, Young received the ‘Outstanding Contribution’ award, given to those who have gone above and beyond to help the ICE and Scotland’s wider civil engineering community.
Young has spent his career inspiring young people to take an interest in engineering as a STEM ambassador, serving a term as president of the Aberdeen Association of Civil Engineers, chairing the ICE Scotland committee and being a key member of ICE Scotland’s policy and external affairs committee, aiding in the improvement of infrastructure policy in Scotland.
The judges were impressed by Young’s passion for the industry, where he brings an incredible dedication to sustainability and innovation. Upon reception of his award, Young said, “Being involved with ICE over the years has been really rewarding. It’s allowed me to do things I never thought I’d do and achieve things I never thought I’d achieve. It’s helped make for me what has been a wonderful and fulfilling career in civil engineering. This award really is a huge honour.”
In Case You Missed it:
The ICE Scotland Awards are presented at the annual ICE Glasgow and West of Scotland branch dinner, the largest civil engineering dinner in the UK, hosting over 800 engineers from across Scotland. Highlighting the impact of the event, ICE Scotland regional director Matt Lancashire said, “These awards provide a fantastic platform to celebrate the outstanding contributions and expertise of civil engineers across Scotland. They showcase the profession’s crucial role in driving sustainable economic growth, while recognising the diverse talent shaping the future of our communities.”
