AN additional £1.1million to upgrade Bucksburn Swimming Pool before it reopens was agreed today (12 September) at committee.

The upgrade which is additional to normal reopening works came after the project design team undertook detailed appraisal of the building along with specialists to develop a recommended scope of works, Aberdeen City Council’s Finance and Resources Committee heard.

The external design team were appointed to deliver the project after a decision at Full Council to recommission the facility.

Councillor Alex McLellan, Convener of the Finance and Resource Committee, said: “Aberdeen City Council is committed to carrying out works to upgrade the facility before re-opening the Bucksburn Swimming Pool, so additional resource has been allocated to the project.

“We are committed to seeing the Bucksburn Swimming Pool re-open, and the upgrade works will ensure it is a real asset for the community for years to come.”

Council Co-Leader Ian Yuill said:  “The information on recommissioning Bucksburn Pool helps with planning the reopening of this local facility. People in the swimming community will be keen to see the next stage as the project moves forward.”

The report to the committee said there are still pressures in the building trade which could affect the final cost such as inflation, energy supply, Covid 19 impacts, the war in Ukraine, Red Sea disruption and Brexit. Close collaboration is being maintained with finance colleagues.
