AFBE-UK Scotland to hold STEM careers event to help teenagers

DIVERSITY and inclusion organisation AFBE-UK Scotland is holding a careers event to help young people.

The Aberdeen-based group is holding its virtual event for 12 to 18 year olds – part of its Transition programme – on Thursday, November 11, 2021 from 5pm to 7.30pm. Parents and guardians are welcome to join in on the fun.

The careers fair is part of a series of events aimed at bridging the gap between academia and industry for young people, particularly those from under-represented backgrounds looking to pursue a career in the science, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM) sectors.

The Transition programme has helped thousands of attendees develop their career skills since launching in 2012.

This month’s event will showcase companies across the motorsport, finance and energy sectors with Mercedes Formula 1, Bloomberg and EnQuest taking part.

Youngsters will be given the opportunity to engage with companies, find out about various routes into employment and have the potential to secure placement opportunities.

Programme lead, Dr Urenna Adegbotolu, said: “These events have proven very successful over the years by connecting companies with young people.

“Although the event is to be held virtually, we hope those in attendance find it useful. We are delighted to be able to put on an event for this age group.”

AFBE-UK Scotland supports all young people, particularly those from black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds, with career aspirations in STEM.

The organisation also has a schools programme called NextGen, where industry leaders and professionals give advice to pupils through engaging events. Its Real Projects programme see industry professionals share their knowledge and expertise.
