An organisation that encourages people from under-represented groups to consider a career in engineering is staging two advisory events in Aberdeen later this month.
AFBE-UK Scotland is a not-for-profit body run by industry professionals who give up their time to provide insights for pupils, students and graduates. The Aberdeen-based organisation runs around 20 events annually and has helped more than 700 people across its three main programmes – NextGen, Transition and Real Projects.

The group will stage a NextGen event at Hanover Street School on Thursday, March 29. Primary pupils will take part in a series of fun games and challenges designed to test problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills. In addition, youngsters will also watch a video highlighting the relevance of engineering to everyday life. Experienced personnel from oil and gas businesses will also be on hand pass on advice.
As part of AFBE-UK Scotland’s Real Projects series of events, CORE Business Group will pass on its expertise at an evening event on Thursday, March 29 at the New Kings Building (NK 11) at the University of Aberdeen. Audrey Batten and Steve Johnson, directors at Aberdeen-based CORE, will give a talk on why businesses fail.
CORE’s insights will cover key perceptions, challenges and opportunities, consequences of not doing, business relationships and behaviours, values and how to think. The event is free to attend but registration is required.

“Our Real Projects event with CORE Business Group will inform graduates and young oil and gas professionals of the need for a strategic approach across key areas of business operations. This will be a presentation full of thought-provoking insights with a view to successful outcomes.”
AFBE-UK Scotland encourages industry professionals to share their working experiences with young people, students and graduates. The Scottish division is led by Dr Folayan, a senior process engineer consulting at an oil and gas business.
Last month AFBE-UK Scotland held a careers advice day at Robert Gordon University to help nearly 100 students with the transition into STEM-related jobs, in particular opportunities in the oil and gas sector.
