The Duncan Skinner Brighter Futures Legacy Fund supports the Trust’s work with young people in the local community, including a year-long Youth Ambassador programme that aims to provide participants with the opportunity to gain essential life experiences, skills and qualifications.

The proceeds from today’s golf event will go to the Brighter Futures fund, which is on course to hit its £100,000 fundraising target and offer up to 100 additional young people the chance to join the scheme.

Duncan’s close friends Mark Wilson and Iain Landsman have joined forces with Joe Harper’s Golf Day, which takes place today at Deeside Golf Club, a favourite course of the keen golfer.

Around 112 golfers have purchased tickets to enjoy a round of golf and raise money for a worthy cause.

Participants will also be able to take part in a silent auction and raffles, find out more about the work of the Trust and pose for a picture with Aberdeen FC mascot Angus the Bull.

The legacy fund was set up earlier this year in memory of Mr Skinner, who sadly passed away in April after a year-long battle with cancer.

Kickstarted with a donation of £20,000 from Mr Skinner himself, AFCCT set a goal of raising £100,000 for the fund.

The first fundraising effort came in the form of a mammoth hillwalking challenge, which saw a team of four conquer seven Munros in just 24 hours.

AFCCT Chief Executive Liz Bowie was joined by Trust ambassadors and good friends of Duncan, Mark Wilson, Iain Landsman and Eric Harper, who collectively raised £53,000.

A total of £85,000 has now been raised for Brighter Futures, thanks to the achievement of the Munro Challenge team and other generous donations.

AFCCT chief executive Liz Bowie said: “We are thrilled to have raised the amazing milestone amount of £85,000 and we hope to reach our £100,000 target in the coming weeks.

“Around 50 young people have already benefited through the Youth Ambassador programme, but the Trust has never had the funding to expand it until now. By reaching our £100,000 target, we can put 150 young people through the Youth Ambassador programme in the next five years, improving their chances of securing employment and reaching their full potential.

“We are grateful to everyone who is taking part in the golf day and other fundraising events, and we wish them all luck on the golf course on Thursday!”

AFCCT was established as the official charity partner of Aberdeen Football Club in 2014, with the aim of providing support and opportunity to change lives for the better throughout the North-east.

The charity engages with more than 17,000 participants every year across 60 programmes and initiatives, ranging from walking football and fitness classes to dementia-friendly projects and providing meals during the holidays to children from lower income families.
