At least one violent attack is reported each day in schools across Aberdeen, new figures have revealed.

The revelation comes after a 12-year-old girl was injured in an alleged knife attack at the city’s Hazlehead Academy.

New statistics from Aberdeen City Council show there have been 401 “violent incident reports” recorded across its school estate over the last year.

In 2024/25, 387 of these happened in Aberdeen’s primary schools, while a further 14 violent attacks happened in secondary schools.

There were even more recorded in the previous year, with staff having to deal with 441 violent incidents.

A total of 418 of these took place in primary schools across the city with the remaining 23 occurring in secondary schools.

Scottish Conservative shadow justice secretary and North East MSP Liam Kerr said: “The terrifying incident at Hazlehead Academy is an example of the frightening issues facing schools across Aberdeen and my thoughts go out to the young pupil who was injured.

“Schools should be safe and secure places to learn yet these horrifying figures tell a different story.

“Children deserve to learn in environments free from violence, and our teachers deserve to feel safe in their place of work, which is why urgent steps must be taken by the Scottish Government to reverse this problem.

“Staff and pupils shouldn’t be made to feel afraid, but they are the ones suffering the consequences due to a lack of action in tackling this dreadful trend.

“At a time when savage cuts are being imposed on Aberdeen City Council’s budget, the SNP government must give schools the resources they need to ensure there is always a zero-tolerance approach to violence in our classrooms.”
