Aberdeen-based AFBE-Scotland is an organisation that supports engineering as a career choice among under-represented groups.

There are three awards: Company of The Year, sponsored by Oil & Gas UK; Outstanding Mentor Award, sponsored by the Energy Institute; and BME Young Professional of the Year, sponsored by the Society of Petroleum Engineers Aberdeen Section.  In addition, the event is supported by Shell, Schlumberger and the Royal Academy of Engineering. The deadline for award entries is October 12, with the finalists announced on November 12.

The theme of the dinner and awards night is The Energy Future of the UK, with Oil & Gas UK chief executive Deirdre Michie the keynote speaker.

Dr Ollie Folayan, chairman of AFBE-UK Scotland and host for the evening, said: “We would like to thank the companies and organisations that have stepped in to make these awards happen.

“This is an opportunity to put the focus on diversity and inclusion in the energy sector. The awards will highlight company and individual successes, and bring them to attention of a wider audience. AFBE-UK Scotland is platform for new thinking and encouraging the next generation. I’m delighted we have been able to hold these awards for the first time.

“The event brings together business leaders, government officials, industry professionals and students for an evening of inspiration, celebration and multicultural entertainment. We are hoping the awards go from strength to strength with continued industry support.”

Deirdre Michie, CEO at Oil & Gas UK, said: “AFBE-UK Scotland’s event is an important platform to highlight efforts to improve diversity and inclusion in the UK’s offshore oil and gas sector, and I’m delighted to be invited to speak at the inaugural awards.

“The future of our energy mix will bring fresh challenges as we look to maximise economic recovery from the basin and explore new opportunities.

“It’s more important than ever that we support people from a variety of backgrounds to enter our industry. Initiatives like those run by AFBE-UK Scotland show what can be achieved when we work together.”

AFBE-UK Scotland is a not-for-profit organisation that encourages young people, particularly those of black and minority ethic (BME) origin, to consider a career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. It has supported more than 1,000 people – from youngsters to industry professionals – through a series of Aberdeen events that have included senior managers engaging with primary pupils, to talks by oil and gas industry leaders.
