AN independent Aberdeenshire-based customs firm will run its first face-to-face training course in almost two years, ahead of the new Customs Declaration Service (CDS) being fully launched at the beginning of April 2023.

The Customs Declaration Service (CDS) is the computer system being introduced by HMRC to replace the existing Customs Handling Import Export Freight (CHIEF). HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will gradually reduce CHIEF services, with functionality switched-off in 2 phases: CHIEF will close for import declarations on 30th September 2022, and for export declarations on 31st March 2023.

The in-depth course – An introduction to CDS – will take place on Monday 21st March 2022, at Bethan’s office premises in Colpy Business Park, Oldmeldrum. It follows on from a sold-out free taster session on the topic which the firm offered in early February.

Bethan’s Managing Director, Nicola Alexander, highlights how important it is to ensure teams are up-to-speed on the new system: “All businesses involved in importing and exporting will be required to declare the goods to HMRC via CDS, either on behalf of their own business or by way of a customs agent.

“There will be a requirement for businesses to provide additional information to their customs agent or freight forwarder following the change, so it’s important that personnel are aware of this well ahead of these changes.

“At Bethan we make it our mission to support and provide comprehensive, straightforward training to businesses as they navigate legislative changes.”
