A woman from Bosnia who came to the Aberdeenshire in 1992 following the outbreak of war in her home town of Sarajevo is hosting a local retreat in May at Elsick House near Stonehaven and is offering one free place to someone in need.

Ivana Petrovich, who will be leading the daily yoga classes, along with Adrijana Allan, her retreat co-host said “this is our first 3 night retreat to help people distress from the grinds of the daily life and we’d love to offer one free space to someone who’s going through a hard time to come along and take some time out for themselves”.

Adrijana Allan will be offering guided meditations on the retreat and is looking forward to holding a space for the retreat attendees to help them with any transitions they may currently be experiencing.

Ivana added “life is for living and should be full of happiness, laughter and joy. However, this is not always the case and for many life can be full of hardship and sadness”. When I set up my local yoga classes in Drumoak and Banchory, my only desire was to give back and share the benefits of yoga I’d experienced with others. Yoga can help with not just the physical ailments many of us deal with on a daily basis , but it can also support us on a mental and an emotional level. When I started practising in 2010, I didn’t quite realise the profound effect it would have on my life.

“I came to Aberdeenshire as refugee in 1992 thanks to the hospitality and warmth of the local people and we would love to give back to the Scottish community the way that they gave back to my family and I when we needed the most help” Ivana added.

The space is offered to a man or a woman who is going through any sort of hardship and is financially constrained. For anyone who would like to apply for a free space (or nominate someone), please email or visit the website with a short description of current circumstances (any details shared will be treated in strictest confidence).  The retreat is taking place from 2nd to 5th May at Elsick House near Stonehaven All entries to be submitted by Sunday, 21st April.
