BP has confirmed the appointment of Albert Manifold as its new chair, marking a significant leadership transition for the global energy company.
Manifold will join BP’s board as a non-executive director and chair-elect on 1 September, officially stepping into the chair role on 1 October. At that time, Helge Lund will step down from his position as chair and as a director on the board.
Albert Manifold brings a wealth of experience to BP, having served as Chief Executive Officer of CRH plc from January 2014 until December 2024. During his tenure, he was credited with strategically reshaping the CRH portfolio and delivering sustained growth and performance.
His leadership style is noted for its focus on cost efficiency, disciplined capital allocation, and robust cash flow generation.
In addition to his executive background, Manifold is a non-executive director at LyondellBasell, a major global chemicals producer, and at Mercury Engineering, a leading engineering consultancy. He continues contributing to CRH as a special adviser to its board and serves as an adviser at the investment firm Clayton Dubilier & Rice.
Dame Amanda Blanc, BP’s senior independent director who led the succession process, commented on the appointment: “I am delighted that following a rigorous and comprehensive global search we have been able to appoint Albert as our new chair.
“His impressive track record of shareholder value creation at CRH demonstrates he is the ideal candidate to oversee BP’s next chapter…. Albert has a relentless focus on performance which is well suited to BP’s needs now and into the future. He transformed and refocused CRH into a global leader by building on its rich heritage to deliver superior growth, cash generation and returns.”
Blanc also extended her gratitude to the outgoing chair, Helge Lund, for his dedicated service during a period of significant change for the company.
Reflecting on his appointment, Manifold stated: “It is an honour to be appointed chair of one of the world’s great energy companies, and to have the opportunity to help the company reach its full potential. BP has a vital role to play in addressing the world’s growing energy needs.
“I look forward to working with the BP board, Murray and the leadership team to accelerate delivery of BP’s strategy and drive compelling and sustainable shareholder value creation.”
