Famous for its picturesque scenery, winding serpentine roads and historic routes, Britain’s roads can be a challenge for drivers. Many car owners experience the problem of rapid tyre wear, which can lead to significant costs and dangerous situations on the road. Rapid tyre wear is a problem that can have various causes. Let’s take a look at what can cause rapid tyre wear and how to avoid it.

State of the roads

Many of the UK’s roads, particularly in rural areas, are in need of repair and maintenance. Pits, cracks, potholes and uneven areas can cause mechanical damage to tyres and uneven wear, as well as loss of vehicle control.

In metropolitan areas, the roads are usually smooth, with a smooth asphalt surface and clear markings. However, even in large cities, you can find areas with potholes and bumps. In addition, tyres can wear out faster in urban areas due to heavy traffic and frequent stopping and starting.

In rural areas, the roads may be more uneven, narrow, gravelly or even unpaved, which can have a significant impact on the condition of the tyres.

Other factors affecting tyre wear

Weather conditions. Heavy rain, snow and ice can damage the road surface, making it more uneven and prone to potholes. Potholes and bumps can damage the tie rod ends and other suspension components. And the effect of the track rod end on tyre wear and your vehicle’s handling can be adversely affected if the handpiece is worn or damaged.

Terrain. Mountainous roads with many uphill and downhill gradients and sharp curves put more stress on the tyres and cause uneven wear, especially on the front wheels.  Driving on dirt roads, cobblestones or uneven terrain may cause the tyres to wear more quickly than driving on smooth asphalt.

Storage conditions. Improper storage of the vehicle and tyres can lead to damage. For example, storing tyres in the sun or in a wet place can cause them to crack and shorten their service life.

Driving Style. driving, hard braking and sharp cornering can cause tyres to wear out quickly.

How to avoid rapid tyre wear

Ensure that the tyre pressure is in accordance with the recommendations of your vehicle manufacturer.

Store your tyres in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Avoid aggressive driving, hard braking and sharp cornering.

Choose tyres with a high wear rating that are suitable for the climate conditions in your area and your driving style.

If possible, choose routes with better road quality and avoid potholes and other road surface defects.

Regularly inspect your tyres for cracks, cuts, blowouts and other damage. If you find any damage, contact a specialist immediately.

Having your vehicle serviced in a timely manner will help you keep it safe and in good working order and extend the life of your tyres.
