A North East MSP has backed local school children and their families who are campaigning against the closure of their primary’s kitchen.

The kitchen at Rhynie School produces hot meals for 74 children and also for the 16-pupil Lumsden PS nearby.

Under budget saving measures by Aberdeenshire Council, these will now be produced and packaged four miles away at Kennethmont School.

Almost 1,000 people have signed the petition which can be found here: https://www.change.org/p/save-rhynie-primary-school-nursery-kitchen-and-many-more-from-closure

Alexander Burnett visited the school and said the local authority should have consulted parents before going ahead.

Mr Burnett’s social media video urging a u-turn has had 50,000 views.

The Aberdeenshire West MSP said:

“It’s very understandable why parents are upset with this decision, which for many has come out of the blue because there was no period of consultation.

“Not only are they losing a fantastic facility, but they’re also losing the link with the Gardening Club where the children grow their own food. The pupils even have their own recipe book.

“And importantly, they’re learning where food comes from and how it gets from the field to their plate.

“I ask the council to reconsider this decision but am also urging the SNP Scottish Government to properly fund our councils because cuts from the top are the underlying reason we’re seeing so many unfair decisions like this.”
