AS THE nation prepares to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III, Aberdeen residents and visitors to the city will have the opportunity to take part in local celebrations.
A free family event is to be held on Sunday 7 May and Coronation-themed packs are to be delivered to city nursing homes and sheltered housing complexes.
The focal point of the public holiday weekend in Aberdeen will be The King’s Coronation Family Celebration on Sunday 7th May at Duthie Park from 11.30am-2.30pm.
The fun-filled event will feature live music from Iron Broo performed in the bandstand along with performances from The Grampian and District Pipes and Drums and The Rock Choir. There will also be a range of free activities for all ages, including face painting, a climbing wall, Zorb’s, Movement Evolution – agility course and Wheelie Fun – segways.
Deliveries of large Coronation cakes and decorations are planned for city nursing homes and sheltered housing complexes where residents will gather to watch the Coronation on television. Decorative bunting and posters have been designed by local school children and will be included in the packs. The deliveries will be made by some of the city’s Deputy Lieutenants on behalf of the Lord-Lieutenant on Friday 5th of May.
In his role as His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant, Aberdeen’s Lord Provost David Cameron will attend the historic Coronation of King Charles III, as Aberdeen’s representative, at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6 May.
Aberdeen Lord Provost Dr David Cameron said: “His Majesty The King’s Coronation will be a momentous and historic occasion and it is fantastic that residents and visitors to the city will have the opportunity to join in the celebrations at our King’s Coronation Family Celebration.
“I am also delighted to be able to arrange the delivery of cakes and decorations to the city’s nursing homes and sheltered housing complexes. It is especially important that residents of all ages are included in the celebrations, particularly those from King Charles’ generation.
“This is a historic moment in our history – and everyone has a chance to be a part of it whilst enjoying the celebrations we have planned.”
The public are being asked to bring their own picnics; however, the Duthie Park Café will also be open.
Limited parking is available in the area surrounding Duthie Park, and with large crowds expected, the public are being asked to consider using public transport or walking to the event where possible.
A private Service of Thanksgiving to mark the Coronation will also take place on Saturday 13th May. The church service will be held at St Machar’s Cathedral, by invitation only.
