Scottish construction firm Robertson Group has reported a significant return to profitability for the financial year ending 30 June 2025, rebounding from a challenging previous period. The Elgin-based firm, known for high-profile projects such as Aberdeen’s £50 million beachfront regeneration, posted a pre-tax profit of £20.2 million, a stark improvement from the £9.7 million loss recorded in the prior year.
The company attributed its 2024 loss, which included over £28 million from three poorly performing contracts, to specific operational issues and broader industry pressures, including provisions related to the Building Safety Act and the Housing (Cladding Remediation) (Scotland) Bill.
Sir William Robertson, a director of the group, lauded the swift recovery, stating: “The lessons learned from 2024 have been fully embedded into our processes. Several of our companies delivered outstanding trading results in 2025, and our portfolio continues to prove resilient.”
Despite the return to profit, overall turnover for Robertson Group (Holdings) Ltd saw a slight decrease, falling to £793 million from £825 million. This reduction, however, was a deliberate strategic choice, reflecting the group’s renewed focus on “quality over quantity.”
Chief Executive Officer Elliot Robertson emphasised the success of this strategic redirection.
“2025 saw the group focus on quality over quantity and recover a strong financial position following disappointing results in 2024. A full review and embedding enhanced governance processes have seen a positive year of performances across the portfolio of businesses. This returns us to profitability with a healthy order book for 2026, our 60th year of trading.”
In Case You Missed it:
The positive results were underpinned by strong performances across regional construction divisions, including those in Tayside, North East England, and Central East, as well as Robertson Timber Engineering, all of which reportedly outperformed their respective business plans.
The group concluded the financial year with robust cash reserves of £74 million and no external debt, providing a solid foundation for future investment in its workforce, infrastructure, and ongoing projects. The company’s workforce increased by 24, reaching a total of 2,887 employees.
Robertson Group remains active on several significant developments in Aberdeen. These include the substantial Aberdeen beachfront regeneration, a £50 million project forming part of Aberdeen City Council’s wider masterplan, with various phases scheduled for completion in 2025 and 2026. The company is also involved in the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub, a joint venture between BP and Aberdeen City Council, which aims to produce approximately 300 tonnes of green hydrogen annually once operational in 2026.
