To enter the Future Legal Mind competition in 2023, you must be an undergraduate or postgraduate aged at least 18, studying at a UK-based institution. Submit an essay of no more than 1,200 words that answers this year’s question before 31st July 2023 and the £1,500 cash prize could be yours. The winner will also receive a mentoring session with an experienced lawyer.

For a future lawyer, the chance to have their name mentioned in several publications is the ultimate leg-up for their career. There’s something for runners-up too, with a £500 cash prize to be won.

This Year’s Question

Do you think you could be the Future Legal Mind of 2023? To put your name forward, you’ll need to write a convincing essay that answers the following question:

“To what extent do you believe AI could ever replace the role of human judges? And what would be the benefits or potential drawbacks of integrating artificial intelligence in this way?”

If you’ve got aspirations towards a career in law, you’ll already know how important it is to be two steps ahead. You’re probably fully engaged with any recent developments that have implications for the legal field. The competition is your chance to put this knowledge to good use.

In light of one recent senior judge’s prediction that AI may one day be more capable than human law professionals, National Accident Law is keen to see how the UK’s next generation of lawyers tackles the question.

Jonathan White, Legal & Compliance Director at National Accident Helpline gives prospective contestants an overview of what the top answers should show:

“As we all know, AI has dominated the headlines recently, but we’re asking students to look past that and consider what the real benefits could be for the legal profession. The best answers would display a real understanding of the issues facing the legal sector currently, and how we might realistically resolve them“

What previous winners have to say

It’s an amazing chance for future lawyers to show future employers their value. Last year’s Undergraduate winner was Syed Adil, a student at the University of Aberdeen

When speaking about how the competition helped him, he said:

“This competition has given me confidence in my reasoning abilities, to get my ideas across in the most concise way possible.”

Syed hopes to use his dual degree in Scots and English Law with European Legal Studies and a future master’s degree to build a career as a cross-border barrister. Holding the Future Legal Mind 2022 title spells a promising start to a bright career.

If you think next year’s winner could be you, there’s still time to get your entry in!
