Aberdeenshire Council has confirmed it will remove more than half of the region’s grit bins – approximately 1,200 out of 1,800 – this year as part of a sweeping cost-saving measure.
The move, announced ahead of the winter season, has drawn sharp criticism from local SNP councillors, who warn of increased safety risks for residents.
The council stated that the decision follows a review of winter maintenance services and aims to reduce operational costs. “It carries a substantial cost to currently fill all existing 2,000 grit bins,” the council noted in its impact assessment, adding that only bins meeting strict criteria will remain in place.
SNP councillors have publicly condemned the decision, arguing it will leave vulnerable communities exposed during icy conditions. SNP group leader Gwyneth Petrie said:
“This is a short-sighted move that puts cost savings before community safety. Removing so many grit bins will make it harder for people – especially the elderly and those in rural areas – to keep their streets and footpaths safe in winter.”
She added:
“We understand the council faces financial pressures, but slashing grit bin provision risks accidents and could put additional strain on our health services.”
Aberdeenshire Council maintains that the remaining grit bins will be allocated based on a set of criteria, prioritising locations with steep gradients or where there is no alternative within walking distance. The council encourages residents to use the online request system to report issues or request new bins if they believe their area still qualifies under the new rules.
Local residents and community groups have expressed concern about the impact of the cuts, particularly in areas that frequently experience severe winter weather. The council’s own impact assessment acknowledged that “some of the provisions mentioned above would impact people’s safety,” but emphasised the need to balance service provision with available resources.
