The BA Cultural Centre hosted a vibrant “Explore Azerbaijani Dance” workshop on May 31, 2025 in Aberdeen, at 27 Kepplestone Avenue, bringing together dance enthusiasts from across the city. Led by Helen Lynch of the University of Aberdeen and Billura Bernard, the free event introduced participants to the captivating rhythms and expressive movements of Azerbaijani folk dance, immersing them in the rich traditions and stories behind each step.

The workshop, held just days after Azerbaijan’s Independence Day on May 28, offered a timely celebration of Azerbaijani heritage. Independence Day marks the founding of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in 1918, a milestone in the nation’s history and a symbol of resilience and cultural pride. Attendees learned iconic dances such as Uzun Dere , Yalli and others countries dances, experiencing firsthand how Azerbaijani dance embodies unity, joy, and centuries-old customs through dynamic group formations, intricate hand gestures, and colorful costumes.
Helen Lynch, Reader in Early Modern Literature & Creative Writing at the University of Aberdeen, brought her expertise in intercultural engagement to the event. Lynch is also known for organising Balkan Dance workshops at the university, where she introduces participants to dances from Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, Romania, Turkey, Armenia and more, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and cultural exchange. Her commitment to sharing world dance traditions was evident as she guided participants through the unique rhythms and stories of Azerbaijan.
