Dame Maureen Lipman is set to star in brand new heartwarming comedy Allegra, coming to His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen from Tuesday, May 26 to Saturday, May 30.

Maureen Lipman (BAFTA nominee Pianist, Coronation Street, See How They Run, Educating Rita) stars as Allegra, in this moving comedy with lively musical sequences and plenty of laughter. It is also a tender and emotional story about family, love and the way even the most beautiful minds can begin to disappear.

Aberdeen Performing Arts Chief Executive, Sharon Burgess, said: “We loved the sound of this show, which is bursting with heart, joy and positivity and is bound to leave you feeling uplifted.

“With the inimitable Dame Maureen Lipman in the starring role, touring the UK for the first time in 20 years, it just makes it even more special so we are delighted that His Majesty’s is included in the first ever tour of this fantastic new piece of theatre.”

Allegra is full of life, joy and an irresistible urge to sing. She bursts into song at home, in the street, and even in shops and restaurants. Sometimes the music plays only in her imagination, but often it spills into real and disruptive performances that create chaos in her quiet village and amuse, confuse or exasperate everyone she meets.

Her brother Ronen and her carer Anna try to keep her exuberance under control while avoiding angry visits from the local policeman. Yet they face an impossible challenge. How can they protect Allegra without dimming the happiness and wonder that fill her heart and define her spirit?

Dame Maureen said: “‘To find a comedy which can turn our current face of gloom into an upturned grin of happiness, is rare. Allegra is about a woman who is relentlessly upbeat – in more ways than one. Ibsen it isn’t.’’
