DESPITE rain hammering the North-east over the weekend, 80 hardy volunteers took part in Our Union Street’s first volunteer clean up.

Between 10AM and 3PM on Saturday, the volunteers helped spruce up the St Nicholas Kirkyard.

Donned in bright purple bibs, the crew began picking up leaves, branches and weeding the cemetery.

The volunteers ranged in age, with people of all generations giving up their time to tidy up the kirkyard.

Following a short speech at the start, volunteers picked up a rake, shovel or brush and got to work, alongside campaign chiefs.

Brightening up the street is one of five action areas detailed in the latest Our Union Street whitepaper.

Along with channeling people power, the campaign has also launched one of the best incentive packages for new businesses available anywhere in the UK.
