Businesses within Elgin’s St Giles Shopping Centre have been informed they must vacate the premises by January 20, according to information obtained by The Northern Scot.
The closure comes amid reports that Moray Council is pursuing legal action to recover unpaid non-domestic rates totalling approximately £750,000, a sum believed to have accumulated over several years.
St Giles Shopping Centre, which opened in 1991, currently houses retailers such as Argos, Ashers Bakery, EE, Ramsdens, Subway, Vodafone, Waterstones, and WH Smith. Additionally, whisky specialists Gordon and MacPhail are temporarily operating from a unit while renovations are carried out on their South Street premises.

Despite its current tenants, the shopping centre has several vacant units, including those previously occupied by Monsoon, Mountain Warehouse, and Superdrug.
The Aviemore-based owners of the centre, Upland Developments, have been contacted for comment regarding the closure but have yet to respond.
This news marks a significant moment for the Elgin retail landscape, as the community faces the loss of a central shopping hub.
