A CITY centre car park is to get a £1.2million refurbishment including internal decoration of parking areas and stairwells alongside structural repairs, lighting upgrades and improvements, a CCTV upgrade, re-lining, and installation of a new access barrier solution.
The new operating arrangement of Chapel Street car park will bring increased footfall into the vicinity of the west end during the working week with the car park usage figures projected to significantly increase from current figures.
Aberdeen City Council city growth and resources convener Councillor Ryan Houghton said: “It is good to see that work on the upgrades for Chapel Street car park are to start soon and I’m sure people using the facility will appreciate the work when it is finished.”
The car park is to closed from Sunday 24 April 2022 until October 2022 to allow work for the upgrades for the West End facility. Upon reopening for public use, spaces will be allocated to Shell employees as part of their arrival into new city centre offices at the Silver Fin building.

“The move to the Silver Fin building is a signal of our continued commitment to the city and the region and the start of the refurbishment works is an example of the positive impact we hope our relocation to the city centre can make.”
A new barrier system will provide Shell with 400 spaces from Monday to Friday, with the remaining capacity available for public use which will comprise 100 spaces, including existing blue badge parking bays, car club bays, and electric vehicle charging bays. At weekends, the car park will solely be for public use.
The Council has apologised for any inconvenience caused during the period of closure, stating that other local car parks are available for use. Businesses with monthly passes for Chapel Street car park will be able to use Denburn car park as an alternative place to park. The public can use nearby on-street parking and the Summer Street car park (short stay – up to 4 hours) and Denburn car park (long stay – Up to 14 hours) are also available.
