The highly anticipated trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has been unveiled – and it comes with a local connection. Part of the gothic horror film was shot at Dunecht House in Aberdeenshire last August, showcasing the region’s cinematic appeal.
With Scotland increasingly a go-to location for filmmakers – from Avengers: Infinity War to Skyfall – the inclusion of the 19th-century granite mansion adds a hauntingly atmospheric backdrop to del Toro’s retelling of Mary Shelley’s classic tale.
Featuring 24 bedrooms, 16 bathrooms and a mix of Greek, Italian and Scottish baronial architectural styles, Dunecht House provided a suitably eerie setting for the reimagined story of a brilliant but egotistical scientist whose monstrous experiment spirals out of control.
The official logline teases: “A brilliant but egotistical scientist brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.”
In Case You Missed it:
An all-star cast leads the Netflix production, including Oscar Isaac as Dr Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as the Creature, Mia Goth as Elizabeth, Ralph Ineson as Professor Krempe and Christoph Waltz as Harlander. The ensemble also features Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Felix Kammerer, Christian Covery and Charles Dance.
Frankenstein is set for release in November 2025, with the first trailer now live and already sparking buzz from horror fans and cinephiles alike.
Aberdeenshire’s role in the project further cements the region’s growing status as a filming hotspot, drawing international attention to its dramatic landscapes and historic architecture.
