SCOTTISH companies are being urged to take immediate action to equip their operations for upcoming changes in government legislation that will penalise waste.
The deadline for implementing a wide-reaching ban on biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) to landfill has been extended to December 31st, 2025, to allow commercial organisations and local authorities across the country more time to make the necessary preparations.

Two north-east businesses – waste and recycling specialist, One Stop Waste Solutions, and creative design, print and display expert, XIC – have teamed up to create Not-for-Landfill 2025, a dedicated network for organisations that want to conserve valuable resources, reduce reliance on landfill, and promote and encourage reuse and recycling as much as possible.
The network’s first networking event will be held at P&J Live, Aberdeen on Wednesday, May 25th (12:30pm – 4pm) – with more than 100 people expected, including business owners and professionals with responsibility for environmental management.
Spaces are limited for this free event. Tickets can be secured by signing up here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/not-for-landfill-network-tickets-313295724947
Free-to-attend, the afternoon will feature expert presentations to help inspire delegates and generate new ideas on how their businesses can reduce waste, benefit the environment, and improve local communities.
The full line-up of speakers includes:
1:30pm – P&J Live, ‘Powering your sustainable event’
1:50pm – XIC, ‘Creating a sustainable event’
2:10pm – One Stop Waste, ‘The landfill ban opportunity’
2:30 pm – Instant Neighbour, ‘How your waste can benefit the community’
2:50pm – Wood Recyclability, ‘Upcycling turbo-charged’
3:10pm – Two Racoons, ‘Carbon negative wine’
3:30pm – Connect 3, ‘Waste and the circular economy’
Craig Donoghue, managing director at One Stop Waste, said: “We’re extremely pleased to launch the Not-for-Landfill 2025 Network and look forward to welcoming a diverse audience to P&J Live for what will hopefully be the first of many important discussions throughout the north-east business community.”
“We’re aiming to build upon the success of the original Not-for-Landfill campaign, which first launched in April 2016. The issue has gained fresh momentum as the clock ticks down towards the Scottish Government deadline – banning many common waste materials from landfill altogether, but also requiring businesses to recycle at least 70 per-cent of everything else.”
“Our fantastic line-up of speakers will educate people about the risks and opportunities this change in legislation brings. As we continue to recover from the effects of the pandemic, now is the perfect opportunity to turn attention towards implementing practical measures that not only make good business sense but will play a part in helping the country towards our longer-term environmental targets in the aftermath of COP26.”
“We’ll also be encouraging event attendees to sign a pledge, committing their organisation to a range of easy-to-achieve measures that will improve waste management processes and help reduce waste.”
Jason Moir, director at XIC, added: “As a company, XIC is always looking to do things better, adding value where we can. We are well aware that some people think printing can have a negative impact on the environment, that is not true. We will show delegates how they can put on a show with recycled materials and products; something we’re very passionate about.”
“With creativity at our core, we are always evolving, finding new ways of removing plastics from packaging, making our products greener, and encouraging clients to do the same.”
