Sport Aberdeen is backing sportscotland’s national Summer of Sport campaign with a wide-ranging programme of free activities designed to support the health and wellbeing of children and young people across Aberdeen during the school holidays.
Working in partnership with Aberdeen City Council, the organisation is offering free swimming sessions for children and young people aged 4 to 17 at all public and family sessions across its seven swimming pools. Participating venues include Bridge of Don, Bucksburn, Cults, Dyce, Lochside, Northfield and Tullos, providing accessible opportunities for families across the city.
Alongside swimming, young people are being encouraged to take part in Teen Fitness sessions as part of the wider Summer in the City programme. Activities such as Boxercise and HYROX Next Gen will run throughout the summer at Get active @ Kincorth, Get active @ Jesmond and Get active @ Sheddocksley.
The Teen Fitness timetable has been designed with inclusivity in mind, featuring male-only, female-only and open sessions. These are aimed at 14 and 15-year-olds, offering a supportive environment to build confidence, improve fitness and try new activities alongside their peers.
Kim McRobbie, Active Schools & EDI Manager at Sport Aberdeen, said: “We are proud to be supporting the national Summer of Sport campaign, alongside Aberdeen City Council’s Summer in the City again this year, to help more children and young people access free opportunities to stay active over the summer holidays.
“By providing free junior swimming sessions across all of our pools, alongside delivering a range of free and accessible activities, we hope to remove barriers to participation and encourage more families to make the most of the opportunities available through the Summer of Sport campaign.
“It’s also great to see additional Teen Fitness opportunities available this summer, giving young people the chance to try new activities with their peers in friendly gym environments.”
Summer of Sport is a nationwide programme offering free and low-cost sporting activities to help young people stay active within their local communities during the holidays. Backed by Scottish Government investment and administered by sportscotland, the initiative forms part of a £20 million national fund supporting sport and physical activity across Scotland.
