High-net-worth individuals often seek to optimise their tax liabilities through strategic financial planning in countries without taxes. There are 17 countries worldwide with no income tax, and many of them are attractive destinations to move to. These countries offer individuals and businesses minimal or zero tax liabilities.

Top Countries Without Income tax

Antigua and Barbuda. This Caribbean nation offers a beautiful lifestyle with no personal income tax. The Passport of Antigue and Barbuda provides excellent opportunities for investors and retirees. The country’s Citizenship by Investment Program is popular among high-net-worth individuals, offering a passport that grants visa-free access to more than 140 countries.

St Kitts and Nevis. Another Caribbean country imposes no personal income tax. The twin-island nation is famous for its citizenship by investment program for wealthy foreigners. By investing in real estate or contributing to the Sustainable Growth Fund, you can obtain citizenship, which includes visa-free travel to more than 150 countries, including Schengen states.

Vanuatu. Located in the South Pacific, Vanuatu is a paradise for those seeking zero personal income tax. The Vanuatu Citizenship by Investment program allows investors to gain citizenship in 1—4 months and return investment. The country is known for its natural beauty, exotic culture, and favourable tax policies.

United Arab Emirates. The UAE, particularly Dubai, is a hub for business and luxury living. With no personal income tax, the UAE attracts professionals, entrepreneurs and other categories of talented people from around the world. The country offers several residency pathways, including the 10-years renewable Golden Visa. For example, Investors can buy real estate and become UAE residents.

Countries with Lowest Income Tax

Malta offers an attractive tax regime with relatively low income tax rates. As a member of the EU, Malta provides access to the European business market. The country has various residency pathways, such as the Malta Global Residence Programme, which offers tax incentives to foreign nationals.

Cyprus is known for its tax regime, which includes one of the lowest corporate tax rates in Europe — 12,5%. The Cyprus Non-Domiciled tax status is particularly beneficial, offering tax exemptions on foreign dividends, interest, and rental income. The country also has a permanent residency program, making it one of the favourite destinations for high-net-worth individuals with families.

Andorra. Situated between France and Spain, Andorra has no wealth tax, and its income tax rates are among the lowest in Europe. The country’s residency programs cater to investors, providing various options for those looking to relocate.

What Is the 183-Day Rule?

The rule of mandatory residency period is a common benchmark used by many countries to determine tax residency. If you spend more than 183 days in a particular country within a tax period, you may be considered as a tax resident of that country. This rule is essential for high-net-worth individuals seeking to optimise their tax liabilities, as it can impact where they are obligated to pay taxes.

Being aware of the 183-day rule helps in strategic tax planning. By carefully managing your time spent in various jurisdictions, you can avoid becoming a tax resident in high-tax countries. Many countries with no or low income tax use this rule to attract residents, offering favourable conditions for those who meet the criteria.

How to Get Residency in Countries with Zero or Lowest Tax Rates

To obtain residency in Antigua and Barbuda, you can invest a minimum of $230,000. Investors buy real estate, contribute to the National Development Fund, or start a business. The Citizenship by Investment Program is a straightforward path to obtaining a passport within 6 months and enjoying tax-free living.

Similar to Antigua, investors can gain residency by purchasing real estate or contributing to the Sustainable Growth Fund in St Kitts and Nevis. The process is efficient, and the benefits include visa-free travel and no personal income tax.

The Citizenship by Investment Program in Vanuatu requires a non-refundable contribution of $130,000 and other refundable options. This program is known for its fastest processing time of two months, allowing investors to enjoy tax-free living in a tropical paradise.

The UAE offers several residency options, including the long-term Golden Visa for investors, entrepreneurs, and talented professionals. Residency can also be obtained through property investment or setting up a business in one of the country’s many free zones.

Malta’s Global Residence Programme requires pay an administration fee and buy or rent a property in Malta and an annual tax contribution of at least €15,000. The total investment amount doesn’t depend on the family composition. The program offers a favourable tax rate and access to the EU.

The Cyprus Permanent Residency Program requires an investment in real estate starting from €300,000. The program is popular due to its low tax rates and benefits for non-domiciled individuals.

Residency in Andorra can be obtained by investing €400,000 or more in the country’s economy. The Andorra is suitable for registering the tax residency of an international business or opening a new company. The corporate tax rate is 10%. The process includes a Due Diligence check and proof of financial stability.
