Aberdeen is set to experience a freshly baked slice of theatrical success next week as AOC Productions prepares for the Scottish amateur premiere of ‘The Great British Bake Off Musical‘ at His Majesty’s Theatre.
The musical, based on the phenomenally popular television series, promises a heartwarming and humorous journey into the iconic baking tent.
After a premiere at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham in July 2022, a positive critical reception earned the original production a transfer to London’s prestigious Noël Coward Theatre in 2023. Critics lauded the show, with WhatsOnStage describing it as “hilarious, deeply touching and an utterly joyous feast of fun.” The West End production featured notable stars such as John Owen-Jones and Haydn Gwynne, who embodied the show’s beloved judges, providing “jazz hands and sparkly aprons” alongside moments of sincerity.
Now, AOC Productions, a long-standing fixture in Aberdeen’s amateur theatre landscape since 1940, is bringing its unique rendition to the stage, and will be using the West End production’s set in the process.
The company, formerly known as Aberdeen Opera Company, has a rich history of delivering a diverse range of musicals and operettas, including previous HMT Scottish amateur premieres such as ‘Shrek the Musical’ in 2019.
This latest production promises to immerse audiences in the drama, camaraderie, and culinary chaos of the baking competition.
