Repair work to the weather damaged Union Bridge in Keith has been welcomed by Seamus Logan MP.

The £500,000 project to reconstruct the damaged wingwall and reinstate the bridge’s load carrying capacity began on Sunday, 2nd March, with work being carried out by Amey on behalf of Transport Scotland. During the works, escorts will be in place for residents who live within the closure and foot traffic will be able to use the Auld Bridge as a diversion route.

The Aberdeenshire North and Moray East MP said:

“Businesses and residents in Keith and the surrounding area will be much relieved that work has commenced on repairing the Union Bridge after it was severely damaged in the heavy rain last summer. The closure of this bridge has caused traffic delays and frustration after the river bank collapsed affecting the retaining wall.

“I understand that this repair will cause further upheaval for the local community, but Amey have been keen to provide assurance that any disruption will be managed with the use of temporary traffic lights and signed diversion routes in place, with efforts to keep noise disturbance to an absolute minimum as much as possible.”

While work progresses, the A96 between Station Road and Banff Road will be closed from 8am to 6pm, with signed diversion routes in place for both south and northbound traffic. Northbound traffic on the A96 can turn right at the road closure onto the A95/Banff Road. The diversion route will rejoin the A96 via the A95 to Portsoy and the A98 to Fochabers. Southbound traffic can follow this route in reverse.

The work is due to be finished by mid-May, weather dependent, when the bridge and road access will fully reopen to traffic. Amey is keen to signpost residents to their Road Work Alerts Service on their website, where problems can also be reported should they arise.
