To mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11, Specsavers Aberdeen celebrated the vital contributions women make to science and healthcare, with a special focus on optometry and eye and ear health.

The annual day, recognised globally, aims to highlight the critical role women play in scientific progress and promote full and equal access to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.

Specsavers Aberdeen is proud to support the message behind the United Nations established day and champion the women in its team working across optics including Anitta Varghese, who is part of the female optics team at Specsavers Aberdeen.

She is a newly qualified optometrist after studying optometry at the University of Huddersfield and has worked for the locally owned and run business for almost two years.

Anitta says: ‘I was first interested in optometry at a young age but started to seriously consider my career at age sixteen.’

The optometrist has a high prescription and experienced rapidly progressing myopia, which meant frequent visits to the opticians every six months.

‘I found myself researching myopia and learning more about eyes after my appointments, and that curiosity gradually grew into a genuine passion for pursuing optometry as a career.’

Anitta continues: ‘Being able to help customers is incredibly rewarding, and I truly love what I do. I’m also fortunate to work alongside inspiring women who motivate me to grow and further my career.

‘As the youngest qualified female optometrist in my team, I hope to inspire other women to consider a career in science and perhaps even optometry.’

By celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Specsavers Aberdeen hopes to encourage curiosity, confidence, and ambition in young people considering careers in STEM fields, while recognising the achievements of women already making a difference in eye care.
