Renewable energy specialists, AES Solar has completed the installation of 960 Solar PV panels at an Aberdeen recycling centre as part of a £30million rebuild project.
The environmentally friendly upgrade to the Altens East Recycling & Recovery Facility rooftop was undertaken by the Moray-based organisation after rebuilding work was given the go ahead following a fire at the SUEZ plant in July 2022.
Electricity generated from the new solar panels will be used to power the site which is also home to a waste transfer facility, office building and visitor centre.
The 566 kWp Solar PV system is estimated to save over 85 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year – the estimated annual equivalent of planting 3,941 trees.
Colin Forshaw, Production Operations Manager for SUEZ, said:
“We’re delighted to have worked with renewable energy specialists, AES Solar, to install solar panels on the roof of our material recovery facility. The investment is part of our ongoing commitment to decarbonise the way that we manage our customers’ recycling, as well as supporting Aberdeen City Council’s net zero ambitions.”
Jamie Di Sotto, Commercial Director at AES Solar, said:
In Case You Missed it:
“Our team is proudto have played a role in the rebuilding of this vital recycling plant. By harnessing the power of the sun, the facility will significantly lower its carbon footprint – reducing its environmental impact and saving significantly on day-to-day running costs.”
The upgraded facility has the same purpose as before, and will be used to process mixed recycling, including glass, cardboard, newspaper, plastics and metals from households in Aberdeen.
The rebuild is in line with Aberdeen City Council’s ambitions for Net Zero Aberdeen and their Circular Economy Strategy which highlights the importance of maximising the value from waste by recycling at end of life and recovering materials.
